Blockchain.com secures Cayman VASP licence for custody services

Blockchain.com has secured a virtual asset service provider licence from the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority through its local subsidiary, Blockchain (Cayman) Limited, allowing the company to provide virtual asset custody and other approved services in the jurisdiction.

The company said all conditions for the licence were met as of July 22, moving it from conditional approval to full licensing under the Cayman Islands’ Virtual Asset (Service Providers) Act. CIMA had granted conditional approval of the application in December 2025, according to Blockchain.com. The company previously held a Cayman VASP registration dating from May 2022.

In addition to virtual asset custody services, Blockchain.com said it has approval to provide exchanges between virtual assets and fiat currencies and exchanges between different forms of convertible virtual assets. The company offers institutional custody and staking services as well as staking products for retail customers.

Law firm Appleby advised Blockchain.com on the licensing process, working with the company since November 2025. Appleby partner Peter Colegate and counsel Marsha Williamson led the legal team with support from the firm’s Technology & Innovation team.

“We are delighted to support the excellent Blockchain.com team on this major milestone and their continued growth and success in Cayman and beyond,” Colegate said. Appleby said it has advised on two of the five VASP licences successfully granted in the Cayman Islands.

Blockchain.com also plans to expand its physical presence in the Cayman Islands. The company said it partnered with TechCayman in June and expects to make its first on-island hire to support its local operations. TechCayman is assisting the company with sponsorship, operational support and connections within the local technology sector.

“Our VASP custody services licence builds on the regulatory momentum we’ve established with our recent MiCA and FCA approvals,” Blockchain.com co-CEO Lane Kasselman said. “We believe strong regulation is essential to the long-term development of digital assets, and these approvals further strengthen our ability to serve customers across the region.”

The Cayman Islands’ phase two VASP licensing regime took effect April 1, 2025, requiring new applicants and existing VASP registrants to obtain licences to provide virtual asset custody services or operate virtual asset trading platforms in or from the Cayman Islands.
