Consensys splits in two
The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with Joe Lubin serving as chairman and CEO of MetaMask and executive chairman of the new Consensys.
The new Consensys will house the company’s protocols and institutional infrastructure businesses, including Linea, Besu and Teku, and will be led by CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham.
MetaMask will remain focused on consumer self-custody while expanding beyond crypto into payments, savings, investing and traditional financial products, and the company says MetaMask has recorded more than 100 million downloads across roughly 190 countries.
In June, MetaMask launched Money Account, which allows users to earn up to 4% variable APY on eligible mUSD stablecoin balances and spend the funds through MetaMask Card.
Leadership and unresolved questions
The corporate shake-up leaves questions about public-market plans, with Yellow saying the split comes as “IPO and token questions remain unanswered.”
Yellow also reports that “No IPO date or MetaMask token has been confirmed,” even as it describes the separation expected to be completed by the end of 2026.Y
In the announced structure, Joe Lubin will lead MetaMask as chairman and CEO, while Mike Kriak becomes CEO of the new Consensys and David Cunningham serves as president.
The Defiant frames the move as MetaMask becoming a standalone consumer company while Linea, Besu and the institutional infrastructure business move into a newly formed company named Consensys.T
In the same announcement, Lubin said, “Stepping into this role full-time is a recognition that consumer finance deserves the same focus and ambition that we’ve brought to building Ethereum itself.”
What each unit will do
Fortune also says Lubin declined to comment on the renewed timeline for an IPO, and it quotes a spokesperson saying, “We don’t comment on market speculation or potential future capital markets activity.”
On the consumer side, MetaMask’s expansion is described through products such as Money Account, which combines stablecoin yield and spending through MetaMask Card, and it also launched a Mastercard-enabled spending card across 49 US states.
On the institutional side, the new Consensys is set to focus on Ethereum infrastructure and helping financial institutions deploy blockchain technology for tokenization, stablecoins and other onchain financial services.
The Defiant adds that the institutional pitch is built around settlement plumbing, with Cunningham saying, “Financial institutions and market infrastructure are moving to always-on operations with tokenization at the core.”T
