Ethereum EIP-8363 Draws 97% Opposition Amid Comment Purge Claims

Ethereum (ETH) developers face accusations of suppressing opposition to EIP-8363 while the Ethereum Foundation advances plans for quantum-resistant infrastructure by 2028.

    Key Points:

    • EIP-8363 critics accused core developers of deleting comments opposing a proposed staking rewards cap.
    • Validator signaling showed 3% support for the proposal, with 97% opposed at the time of writing.
    • Ethereum developers also plan to advance quantum-resistance work in 2027 and target Layer 1 deployment in 2028.

    Ethereum EIP-8363

Pro-crypto attorney Gabriel Shapiro said an Ethereum core developer deleted about 50 comments from an EIP-8363 discussion on ETH Magicians, where researchers, developers and community members debate technical proposals. He said critics wrote most of the removed posts and called the deletions “dirty tactics.”

One developer linked to the removals said moderators were targeting duplicate or “sockpuppet accounts” allegedly created by opponents who used “AI slop” to argue against the staking proposal. Another analyst said removing the comments was wrong and could strengthen opposition.

Aave CEO Stani Kulechov called the tactics “concerning,” and Ether.Fi‘s Mike Silagadze joined the DeFi opposition.

They argued the proposal could affect Ethereum credit markets and solo stakers, while validator signaling showed only 3% support and 97% opposition at the time of writing.

    Ethereum Quantum Plan

EIP-8363 would reduce staking rewards to zero if staked ETH reaches 50% of the circulating supply. With the staking ratio already at a record 35%, the proposed threshold could become relevant quickly if current staking demand continues.

Separately, Ethereum core developers plan to accelerate quantum-resistance work beginning in 2027, with full Layer 1 deployment targeted for 2028. Researcher Justin Drake said the Ethereum Foundation’s post-quantum team was moving at “breakneck speed,” while the foundation shifts away from Poseidon toward SHA or BLAKE hashing.

The EIP-8363 dispute developed during a period of record staking demand, with 35% of circulating ETH already staked against the proposal’s 50% cutoff. ETH was also trading below $1,900 during the debate, leaving the proposal’s next steps and its potential market impact unresolved.
