Ethereum Slides Below $2,400 After Senate Rejects CLARITY Act, Testing Key Support Ahead of Fed — BigGo Finance

Ethereum tumbled below the $2,400 threshold on Tuesday after the U.S. Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act, a legislative package intended to establish clearer regulatory guidelines for digital assets. The 49-50 cloture vote fell short of the 60 votes required to proceed, triggering an immediate selloff across cryptocurrency markets and shifting trader attention to the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement later this week.

The decline marks a sharp reversal from just days ago, when ETH was trading near $2,600 and market participants were openly discussing a push toward $3,000. The failed vote not only erased that momentum but also pushed Bitcoin below $75,000, underscoring how quickly regulatory headlines can recalibrate sentiment across the entire asset class.

    Regulatory Setback Resets Market Tone

The CLARITY Act was designed to define digital asset classifications and establish compliance standards for market participants. Its defeat in the Senate means regulatory ambiguity will persist, a reality that has historically weighed on institutional appetite for crypto exposure. The vote’s outcome rippled through leveraged markets almost immediately, with roughly $300 million in long positions liquidated across major cryptocurrencies within minutes.

Investment vehicles tracking digital assets absorbed the brunt of the institutional retreat. Combined Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs recorded $592 million in net outflows on September 15, with Ethereum funds alone accounting for $141 million. The table below breaks down the outflows:

ETF Category Net Outflows (Sept. 15)
    Bitcoin ETF $451 million
    Ethereum ETF $141 million
    Total $592 million

Note: Figures reflect combined net outflows across U.S.-listed spot ETFs tracking Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The outflows represent a stark reversal from the prior week, when Ethereum ETF inflows were strengthening and exchange balances continued to decline. That supply-side dynamic had fueled speculation that ETH might be running low on short-term sellers. While the underlying supply constraints have not disappeared, near-term selling pressure has overwhelmed bullish factors for now.

Whale Accumulation Diverges from Retail Selling

Beneath the surface, however, a notable divergence is emerging between institutional and retail behavior. Exchange netflow data shows reserves falling by 159,000 ETH over five days, while wallets holding between 10,000 and 100,000 ETH added roughly 200,000 ETH to their positions over the past week. Retail investors, by contrast, dumped approximately 192,000 ETH, continuing a distribution pattern that has persisted since January.

This divergence extended into ETF flows earlier in the week. Spot Ethereum ETFs attracted $121 million in net inflows on Monday and $216.4 million on Friday, before Tuesday’s outflows reversed the trend. The contrast between whale accumulation and retail selling suggests that larger market participants may be viewing the regulatory setback as a temporary hurdle rather than a structural shift.

Technical analysts are closely monitoring whether ETH can reclaim $2,400 as a first step toward stabilization. Should the asset regain control above that level, resistance between $2,465 and $2,526 comes into play. A sustained move through that range would improve the outlook for another attempt at $2,600.

Fed Decision Looms as Next Catalyst

With the CLARITY Act outcome now behind the market, attention has shifted to the Federal Reserve’s policy decision scheduled for Thursday. According to the CME FedWatch tool, markets have priced in a 92.3% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike, meaning the outcome itself is largely anticipated. The real risk, analysts suggest, lies in the accompanying commentary and forward guidance.

Ethereum is currently consolidating in a triangle pattern, with support between $2,405 and $2,485 and resistance spanning $2,535 to $2,600. The 20-day exponential moving average near $2,425 has held as a floor through the recent pullback, and trading volume has remained constructive rather than capitulatory. This technical posture suggests the current dip may represent consolidation rather than a full-scale reversal.

A decisive close above $2,600 would confirm a breakout, opening a path toward the $2,800 to $3,000 zone that analysts at Bitget have identified as the next psychological target. If ETH instead grinds sideways, the $2,400 to $2,550 range could persist until the Fed decision clears the calendar. A break below $2,350 would invalidate the bullish setup and potentially reopen the August lows near $1,880.

Analyst Perspectives on the Path Forward

Market commentators are divided on the immediate trajectory. Ted Pillows noted that Ethereum has failed to secure a weekly close above $2,550, with price hovering near $2,522 against resistance at $2,546.78. Despite the short-term weakness, ETH remains above its 50-week exponential moving average at $2,386.63, a level that has historically provided support during corrective phases.

Michaël van de Poppe’s hourly chart shows ETH rebounding from support at $2,448, suggesting buyers are defending key levels. Daan Crypto Trades cautioned that the CLARITY Act vote represents only an initial legislative stage, not a final determination, implying that regulatory headlines will continue to influence price action in the weeks ahead.

The broader context is mixed. Ethereum has gained 33.4% over the past 30 days despite a 46.3% annual decline, a divergence that highlights the cyclical nature of crypto market recoveries. The market is simultaneously processing inflation data and legislative developments, with Bitcoin’s price action responding to the same regulatory calculus.

For traders eyeing the $3,000 target, the math is straightforward but sobering. A move from $2,400 to $3,000 represents a 25% gain on an asset with a market capitalization exceeding $1 trillion. That is a meaningful swing, but not the kind of asymmetric return that attracts capital chasing outsized gains. Some market participants are rotating toward earlier-stage infrastructure projects that sit beneath major assets like ETH, BTC, and SOL rather than competing directly with them.

One such project, LiquidChain, is positioning itself as a Layer 3 network that fuses Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana liquidity into a single execution environment. The presale is priced at $0.014956 per token, with approximately $960,000 raised so far. Its architecture centers on a Unified Liquidity Layer and Single-Step Execution, allowing developers to deploy once and access all three ecosystems.

For Ethereum holders, the coming days hinge on two variables: whether $2,400 can be reclaimed as support, and how the Federal Reserve frames its policy outlook. A dovish tone could reignite the accumulation trend that preceded this week’s selloff. A hawkish surprise, however, could accelerate the decline toward lower support zones, with the $2,300 area emerging as the next critical level to watch.
