The Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced Wednesday that 35 victims of cryptocurrency ATM scams have received $171,332 in full refunds for transactions made since September.
That’s when Arizona’s Cryptocurrency Kiosk License Fraud Prevention law took effect, according to Attorney General Kris Mayes.
“My office is happy to help any victim of crypto ATM fraud receive a refund they are entitled to under Arizona law,” Mayes said in the announcement.
Mayes urged Arizonans who believe they have been targeted by a crypto ATM scam to act quickly. Victims must report the fraud within 30 days of the transaction to qualify for a refund.
What victims of cryptocurrency ATM scams should do
Under the law, cryptocurrency kiosk and ATM operators must issue full refunds, including fees, to customers who report being victims of fraud within 30 days of their transactions. Victims must report the fraud to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office or a local law enforcement agency.
The report should include details such as the date, time, location and amount of the transaction, along with information about how the scam occurred.
Victims should also keep their receipts. The law requires crypto kiosk and ATM operators to provide customers with transaction receipts.
“Knowing the signs of crypto ATM fraud can help protect you and your loved ones, but if you have fallen victim to this scam, contact my office right away,” Mayes said. “We are here to help.”
