- Worldcoin has hit a record sign-ups in a single day in Argentina.
- Despite tough regulatory hurdles, the project is still making waves across the board.
Worldcoin, the blockchain-backed biometrics project from OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, is making impressive progress in terms of new signups in the crypto-forward Latin American nation of Argentina. According to a new report from Worldcoin, a record number of sign-ups totaling 9,500 World ID Verifications were recorded in the country, setting a standard that other countries are looking forward to emulating.
While the emergence of Worldcoin has been masked by some forms of controversies, its adoption in countries like Argentina has totally negated the negative sentiments around the project in regions where it has been facing some forms of headwind.
The Worldcoin project is underpinned by World ID which as described by the project is a “global identity protocol powered by the Worldcoin ecosystem. It uses a proof of personhood (PoP) credential issued by a custom biometric imaging device called the Orb to enable people to digitally prove their uniqueness and humanness.”
The model of data collection through the Orb has been a subject of concern for regulators around the world and even though Worldcoin has promised its approach is secure and trustworthy, the project has been suspended from collecting its biometric data in key regions in the European Union.
Despite the unfavorable charter surrounding Worldcoin, its plans to alleviate poverty and drive financial inclusion by giving our $60 worth of WLD tokens to users who successfully sign up might be attributed to its secret recipe for success in regions like Argentina. With the country grappling with hyperinflation as far as its fiat currency is concerned, the opportunity to earn extra income through Worldcoin has proven to be a more effective, risk-free proposition that is being welcomed by more masses across the board.
The Future of Worldcoin
With a mix of ups and downs in its emergence, the future of the Worldcoin project is now very much a subject of intense debate among industry experts and observers. For the project to achieve its aim of being a custodian of the bulk data of the world population, its level of acceptance must grow beyond what it currently is.
To achieve the utmost transparency that might further drive its growth, Worldcoin might need to start highlighting the obscure details behind its token distribution. As reported by Crypto-News Flash, just about 10 wallets currently control as much as 98% of the total WLD tokens in circulation, a figure that is abysmal and speaks so little of adherence to the core tenets of decentralization.
The project will also need to make things right with regulators from different countries so as to expand its coverage. In all, Worldcoin will also need to be more proactive in its sensitization, especially in crypto-friendly regions around the world.
