- The IOTA lead developer hinted that they have dropped GoShimmer MVP for now and will focus on IOTAcore.
- The IOTAcore will provide a complete tech stack for GoShimmer to bring IOTA mainnet features to Coordicide.
As we know, the IOTA Foundation has been working on a few key updates for the IOTA ecosystem this year. Some of them include the introduction of ShimmerEVM and the launch of IOTA 2.0 before the end of the year.
However, there are a few updates recently regarding the launch of IOTACore as well as the GoShimmer platform. The IOTA GoShimmer protocol serves as a prototype node software that looks into the implementation of IOTA 2.0 and shall function as a fully decentralized distributed ledger protocol with its ability to handle more than just payments.
Nonetheless, the current expectations were around having a minimum viable product for GoShimmer based on the GoShimmer node software. As per the market expectations, the MVP was supposed to launch before the end of the month of April.

i know i know, the community is burning and we are right in the middle of MVP-Gate. You haven’t heared it yet? Well, you better have a look into our second daily update on the development of the #GoShimmer MVP and the #IOTAcore Node. pic.twitter.com/X39fskFNIm— ID.iota (@id_iota) April 23, 2023
During a recent discussion on Discord, IOTA enthusiasts were asking whether the GoShimmer MVP is still on the cards. However, lead IOTA developer Dominik Schiener dropped the bomb that they have decided to cancel the MVP as of now hinting that it is not of a higher priority currently and that the team is focusing fully on the implementation of IOTACore.
IOTAcore and GoShimmer
The IOTAcore is nothing but the GoShimmer tech stack that will add the whole functionality of the IOTA mainnet Staking, Voting, Tokenization, Firefly, Visualizer, Layer two anchoring, etc. on top of the GoShimmer consensus protocol Coordicide.
Popular handle ID.iota explains that “It is therefore very likely the team wants to avoid having two PUBLIC testing phases once on #GoShimmer and once on the finished #IOTAcore protocol. I speculated a little about that”.
However, following the comment from IOTA’s lead developer Dominik Schiener wrote that a lot of FUD has emerged recently with several community members sharing their disappointment since they have been promised to receive an MVP, and now they might not get it. ID.iota stated that he’s expecting more clarity in the coming times.
But there’s not a single thing that’s currently planned about the next steps. Hopefully, there’s some commentary from the higher leadership of IOTA in the coming weeks. The IOTA GoShimmer protocol seeks to handle large transactions while offering scalability for 10,000 nodes and 1000 TPs.

However, as we reported last week, some IOTA developers have been implementing test cases and APIs for ConflictDAG-PR. The developers have already run the first test on ConflictDAG-PR which seems to be stable now.
Concerning the IOTAcore, Research Engineer Jonas Theis reported that the team is implementing the StardustVM (ledger) onto the core protocol. An output type similar to Stardust is very important as its addition will unlock all functionalities of NFT, token, etc.
